In many parts of the world, high school students are in final exams. Some students have their placement in college or university or their graduation resting on the results of these exams. Many of these youth are nervous and if you are supporting one or more, I have three suggestions of things that you can do that might help.
My first suggestion is that, if possible, be available. This does not mean that you should hover over them, but rather just be present as much as you can. You never know what they’ll need at the last minute. Maybe they forgot something essential at school that they need to pick up. You can help with that. Maybe they have no underwear left, or their pens have run dry, or it’s 2 o’clock in the morning and they just can’t sleep. You can help with any of those things. Maybe one course has been going very badly and they already know it’s not going to finish well. You can remind them that this is not the end of the world – and really, if your child is healthy and managing most things well, this is not the end of the world.
My second suggestion may come from having had five teenagers around the house myself, but I would suggest that you have tons of good, nutritious food close by. Have ready-to-wrap snacks that they can take with them to class or to the library. Have plenty of water bottles around for them to fill. Prepare hot meals that can be reheated easily. This is not the week to try out new sauces or complicated dishes. This is the week to have lots of old favourites on hand for great healthy meals when someone studying hard needs a break. Is there anything better than your Dad’s lasagna at 8:30 p.m. just before that last hour of reviewing?
Finally, since it would be great if you could be around home as an extra support, consider engaging in quiet, commonplace tasks that complement the contemplative atmosphere. Garden, read, do handiwork, watch television or listen to music at a low non-disruptive volume. Watching you spend time in quiet pursuits is a tacit support of your teen’s own efforts.
